About Weiss & Kahn, PA

WEISS & KAHN provides the type of legal representation that we would want for ourselves: personalized, attentive, creative, confidential, cost-effective, and thorough. If we cannot represent you this way, we will refer you to counsel who can. Between them, the two partners have over 50 years of legal experience. Weiss & Kahn is "AV" rated by Martindale-Hubbell.
The firm's clients include large multinational corporations, small businesses and individuals-both in and outside Florida, and from around the world.
Our staff is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese, and passable in Dutch. And we know US immigration both inside and out. Dr. Owen Kahn, one of our partners, came to the United States from South Africa as a student and eventually gained US citizenship. And Solange Fink, our office manager, immigrated to the United States from Brazil and is also a US citizen. Between them, they've received many of the available visa categories, both immigrant and non-immigrant-and know what it's like to be at the receiving end of the US immigration system.
Our firm practices Immigration and Naturalization Law and Appellate Litigation in state and federal courts, including appeals to the various immigration review bodies within the US Departments of Homeland Security, Justice, and State.
The partners maintain their commitment to professional creativity and thoroughness by publishing and lecturing in their fields. See their publications page on this website. Publishing and lecturing draw on the partners' histories as university professors, both adjunct and full-time:
Owen Kahn -B.A., Oxford University, England; Ph.D., Political Science, University of California at Berkeley; J.D. (cum laude), University of Miami School of Law-currently teaches courses, as an adjunct, in International Law, and International Human Rights, in the University of Miami's Department of International Studies. He has taught law, political science and international relations at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa; the University of California at Berkeley; the University of California at Santa Cruz; and the University of Miami.
Elaine Weiss -B.S. (with highest distinction), Northwestern University; J.D., George Washington University's National Law Center-has taught a variety of subjects at Antioch School of Law, the University of Miami School of Law, and the University of Miami School of Business Administration, including: Appellate Advocacy, Legal Writing, Regulated Industries, Contracts, Sales, Agency Law, Communications Law, Legal Research, and Legal Ethics.
The partners volunteer as judges to prepare the highly successful University of Miami School of Law Moot Court Team for the American Bar Association's National Appellate Advocacy Competition. They serve as expert witnesses and consultants for other lawyers and for the Florida Bar. In these roles, the partners draw on their consulting and work experience in legal, governmental, and international organizations:
Owen Kahn has consulted for the US Department of State and for the United Nations in New York. And he served as a policy analyst at the United Nations Development Programme. Dr. Kahn's r?sum? is available here.
Elaine Weiss was consultant and counsel to the American Bar Association's Commission on the Legal Problems of the Elderly, and special counsel to the Grievance Committee of the Florida Bar on complaints arising out of attorney representation in immigration matters. She also served on the staffs of United States Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III, and Federal Communications Commissioner Nicholas Johnson. And she was in-house counsel for several years for a national air line. Ms. Weiss' r?sum? is available here.
Solange Fink has run our office since 2005, is our primary paralegal, and keeps our lawyers in line.
Solange was born and raised in an old German-speaking part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. She is trilingual in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Her wide experience in a variety of businesses environments includes office manager for a furniture wholesaler-on both the human resources and warehouse sides; and sales and budgeting manager for an international trading company.
Solange is a skilled paralegal, with deep knowledge of the compliance side of the practice of immigration law. Her professional and managerial skills, along with her language abilities, empathy for what aliens experience during the immigration process, attention to detail, and enthusiasm for mastering challenges make her an invaluable resource to the firm's clients (and to its lawyers).
