In 1951, James Brown, Howard Dresser, and Robert Kinsey formed the partnership of Brown, Dresser & Kinsey. James Brown was County Attorney for a number of years. Dresser and Kinsey were in general practice. By the early 1960s, James Brown gave up his County Attorney position and also began general practice.
In 1968, the firm hired University of Iowa Law School graduate David Funkhouser and the firm name was eventually changed to Brown, Kinsey & Funkhouser, P.L.C. By the early 1970s, Robert Kinsey's son, Robert Kinsey III ("Chip"), had graduated from the University of Iowa Law School and was the next attorney brought into the firm. In 1982, James Brown's son, Scott Brown, graduated from Drake Law School and opted to come to Mason City to practice with the law firm.
In 1995, the firm hired another Drake Law School graduate, John Lander, and the name was changed in 2004 to Brown, Kinsey, Funkhouser and Lander, P.L.C. All attorneys are committed to continuing the rich tradition which began at the time of the firm's inception in 1951.
