Advice to law firm management: Focus on development and mentorship of new associates -- the next generation of attorneys at your firm -- rather than the short-term bottom line. Hold abusive and toxic partners accountable. Match industry pay and stop thinking there is something "special" about your firm that justiifes falling below. There isn't. Your firm's branch offices are not well managed,
Pros: Opportunity to get early experience in labor & employment
Cons: Lots of young and abusive partners, associates receive minimal guidance and supervision/mentorship, low pay and highly political. Abusive partners face no accountability, associates are overworked and then thrown under the bus, and there is a culture of finger-pointing among overworked and sometimes incompetent partner-level attorneys that trickles down to junior associates. Firm also cuts corners on benefits and amenities. Limited opportunities for associates to interact with peers -- most of your days will be spent with partners who don't have time for you and have little patience to train anyone.
Partners to Avoid and Why: Branch office managing partners running offices with a history of very high turnover (most of them) are among the worst. Certain other specific partners will actively push for associates to be fired the moment they are unhappy with a single assignment. The firm shelters and even rewards these toxic partners based on their bottom line.
