FPSS was established in 1909 by Hugh T. Fisher, a graduate of the University of Kansas School of Law. Fisher built a highly successful general practice and also served as the Shawnee County Attorney for a number of years. Fisher merged his practice with Irwin Snattinger in the early 1920s. The two earned reputations as skilled litigators in the areas of insurance defense, workers compensation and banking law. Fisher's father-in-law, Edward Smith, joined them a short time later.
In 1938, David Fisher, one of Fisher's four sons, joined the firm. He and Snattinger continued the practice following Hugh T. Fisher's death in 1940. In 1955, David Fisher and Donald Patterson became partners, and these two continued their association with Snattinger until his retirement.
The firm's general practice continued to thrive and expanded into areas including medical malpractice defense, health care law, construction and real estate litigation. In 1959, Keith Sayler joined the firm and concentrated his practice on workers compensation defense. E. Dudley Smith became a partner in 1966, when the firm became known as Fisher, Patterson, Sayler & Smith.
Over the years, the firm continued to grow and add offices to better serve clients throughout Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois. In 1990, the firm opened an office in Overland Park, Kansas; and in 2015, the firm opened an office in St. Louis, Missouri. FPSS has 20 attorneys, a number of whom have been recognized as top performers in various areas of the law and have long been leaders in the bar and the local community. In 2009, FPSS celebrated its centennial anniversary, making a commitment to clients to deliver another 100 years of excellent counsel and representation.
