The firm of Duffield Adamson & Helenbolt, P.C. is the ultimate successor to the firm of Spaid, Fish, Briney & Duffield, established in 1963. The partners in the firm included William Spaid, a long-time resident and former state legislator; Richard R. Fish, an experienced estate planner; Richard C. Briney, a top defense trial lawyer; and Richard Duffield, a recent law school graduate.
At the time of its inception the firm was one of the primary insurance defense firms in the community. Over the years the firm phased out of insurance defense work and shifted its focus to estate planning, estate and trust administration, real estate, and contracts and business formation.
In 1972 the firm established a full service office in Green Valley, Arizona, a retirement community approximately 45 minutes away from Tucson. Five of the firm's attorneys continue to service that office.
When the firm was first established, the population of metropolitan Tucson approximated 150,000 people. Since then it has grown to approximately 1 million people. The firm has intentionally limited its growth in order to preserve its collegial and egalitarian aspects and values.
