For fifty years, our firm has worked tirelessly to protect the rights of individuals in times of crisis: when they are arrested, when they have suffered discrimination or face job loss, and when they face disciplinary action from their schools that could result in terminating their education. Our passion for justice and our personal commitment to our clients and their needs drives us in each and every one of our cases.
Our significant criminal defense experience gives us insight into jury selection and trial techniques and strategy that benefit our clients. Prosecutors know our reputation and know that we can, and will, try cases and win them. We have an extraordinary record of jury acquittals. Recently, we won a major federal criminal case because the judge, after hearing the evidence, decided that no rational juror could find the defendants guilty as charged and consequently directed verdicts of acquittal. Our experience in murder and other serious criminal cases gives us a unique perspective that is invaluable in white-collar cases: it is experience that most white-collar lawyers, many of whom are former federal prosecutors, do not have.
We are also accomplished civil trial lawyers. We believe that our expertise and experience on the criminal side of the court gives us an edge on the civil side. We come into cases assuming that we are preparing for a trial, not for settlement. This preparation and focus means that if and when settlement becomes a possibility, we are always prepared to say no to an inadequate offer and take our client's case to a jury. We have settled many cases, some of them after picking a jury and starting a trial, and we believe our willingness to take the case to trial has resulted in substantially better settlements for our clients. We also try cases, and have obtained substantial monetary verdicts, including multi-million dollar verdicts, and have successfully defended those verdicts on appeal.
The intellectual power of our extraordinary team would be hard to match at any firm. Our attorneys were educated at the nation's best law schools, and many of us started our legal careers working as law clerks for federal and state judges and bring that experience of dealing with cutting-edge trial and appellate issues to bear on our cases. We have tried hundreds of cases and handled dozens of appeals, and those decades of hands-on courtroom work give us the practical experience to handle all types of litigation. Because we are constantly working on different legal issues, we do not allow anything to become routine ? we assess each case from every angle and use our creativity and our wide-ranging legal skills to consider every possible way to approach the case and every tactic we might employ.
We consider it a crucial part of our job not only to develop and present the strengths of our client's case, but to understand every aspect of the case, think it through from the other side's perspective, determine the weaknesses as well as the strengths, and plan for how to deal with those weaknesses in a trial. We work as a team, and we go over the facts and legal issues in the case repeatedly with our colleagues to ensure that we have thought of everything before trial.
We bring this entire spectrum of experiences to the representation of each of our clients and work hard to provide them with the best possible representation, with the goal of enabling them to enjoy the best possible outcomes in their cases.
