In 1948, George W. Phillips, Jr. and Spurgeon (?Sparky?) Avakian founded the firm. Both George and Sparky went on to serve for decades on the Alameda County Superior Court. In 1951, J. Richard (?Dick?) Johnston joined the firm, where he practiced for 49 years until he retired. Neil Horton, a highly regarded leader in the California trusts and estates bar, joined the firm in 1964 and practiced here for 54 years until he retired.
