KF&D History
The firm was founded in 1946 by Fred N. Peterson, Jr. (deceased) and the Honorable Peter S. Popovich (deceased), former Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court and first Chief Judge of the Minnesota Court of Appeals. Since then, KF&D has focused its practice on the representation of school districts and other public employers. As a result, KF&D has a broad-based background in all areas of the law that touch upon school districts. Our attorneys are experienced in all facets of education law, and our qualifications to assist school districts in these areas are the best available.

Our firm has been legal counsel for the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) for more than 65 years. Through that representation we have been involved with preparing and updating research bulletins and the sample agreements contained in the MSBA Service Manual. We assisted MSBA and the Minnesota Association of School Administrators (MASA) in developing and drafting all the model policies in the MSBA/MASA Policy Services Manual. We continue to assist in the review and development of new policies, as well as updates and modifications to existing policies annually. As a result, we are informed of the issues faced by school districts throughout the state and regularly provide advice upon which many school districts base their policies and practices. Further, when issues of statewide importance are appealed, our attorneys have submitted amicus curiae briefs (friend of the court) on behalf of MSBA.

In addition, KF&D is listed on the panels of various insurance carriers which provide insurance defense on behalf of Minnesota school districts.
