The firm of Gebhardt & Smith LLP was founded in Baltimore in 1975 by two young attorneys, Larry Gebhardt and Jim Smith, who met while working as associates at a prominent Baltimore law firm. They had no clients, no business, and little experience, but they had determination and the goal of building an aggressive, result-oriented firm to provide legal services to financial and business clients. They built their firm from scratch by identifying and recruiting hardworking, talented attorneys who shared their goals and by attracting a diverse clientele of financial institutions and business clients.

The firm continued to grow steadily over the next forty years, focusing upon the practice areas of lending and business transactions, bankruptcy and creditors' rights, and litigation. Gebhardt & Smith LLP became known for its exceptional service, prompt turnaround and determination to accomplish the needs of the firm's clients in an aggressive and cost-efficient manner.
