THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY

Fresno, California, is the fifth largest city in the state and the largest inland city, with a population of 520,000 (2016 estimate). The metropolitan area has 1,081,315 people.

The city and county are located in the central San Joaquin Valley. To the west the topography, it is predominantly flat with thousands of acres devoted to agriculture. To the east, the snow-capped Sierra Nevada Mountains rise out of the low foothills. It is the only county in the country that can claim three national parks (Yosemite, Kings County and Sierra National Parks) in its backyard.

The County of Fresno incorporated (April 1885) during the development of the railroad and derived its name from the Spanish word for ash trees, which flourished on local river banks. The county attracted farmers, ranchers, and immigrants seeking a place to settle. The county is a melting pot of ethnic heritages and is rich in cultural diversity, now including Basque, Asian, Indian, Armenian, Hispanic, Hmong, Chinese, Portuguese and Japanese among its residents.

Fresno is the location of three major colleges and universities: California State University, Fresno (Fresno State); Fresno Pacific University, a Christian private college; and Fresno City College, a community college. Other accredited institutions include the Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary, and the Fresno Campus of Alliant International University. It also has campuses of National University and University of Phoenix.

CULTURAL & COMMERCIAL ATTRACTIONS:

Save Mart Center, a large indoor arena completed at the end of 2003, which has hosted a wide range of musical acts, as well as sporting events. Trade Publication Pollstar ranked the arena 24th in the world for 2004 ticket sales. This new arena replaces the downtown's Selland Arena as the home for Fresno State Men's Basketball, Fresno Falcons games, and major events.
Tower District in the southwest of Fresno is home to a number of higher end eating establishments, night clubs and independent book and record stores, along with the historic Tower Theater. It is the home of Fresno Film Works, an organization that every month shows a recent independent film that would otherwise not come to town. The Tower District is also home to Good Company Players which has two performance spaces within a block of one another (Roger Rocka's Dinner Theater and Second Space Theater) and performs musicals and plays throughout the year. The area is overflowing with historic, early 20th Century mansions and apartment buildings, many in the California bungalow style. The continued preservation of these buildings in this and other areas of the city is one of many focuses of the group 1,000 Friends of Fresno.
Fresno Arts Council holds a monthly art hop that features many artists in the Fresno area and is held every first Thursday of the month from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. One of the biggest art events takes place during the annual Rogue Performance Festival in March.
Fresno has its own Fresno Art Museum and a large metropolitan museum.

The cost of living in Fresno is 26.6% lower than in Los Angeles, 24% lower than in Oakland, and 28.9% lower than in San Diego. On the other hand, salary scales are only slightly lower than the cities (for example, 3% lower than in San Diego). Thus, there is a significant net positive change in disposable income in moving from one of those cities to Fresno.
