The firm was established in 1979 when Craig Foss and Tim Kuiken formed the law firm of Foss and Kuiken which consisted of two attorneys and two legal secretaries. Craig Foss began his legal career in Fairfield in June, 1975 and Tim Kuiken began his legal career in Fairfield in August, 1976.

In July, 1983 Myron Gookin (who in 2011 was appointed District Court Judge in the 8A Judicial District) returned to his home town to practice law and was recruited to join the firm. Eventually the firm became Foss, Kuiken & Gookin, P.C.

Then in January, 1986, two long-time Fairfield attorneys and natives, Scott Jordan and Dillon Turney merged their law practices with Foss, Kuiken and Gookin. Scott had practiced with his father, Arthur Jordan, who had started his own law practice in Fairfield years before. Dillon's family was involved in a local industry known as the Turney Wagon Works. Both Dillon and Scott had practiced law in Fairfield for more than 40 years at the time of the mergers.

In August, 1988 Sarah Cochran joined the firm. Sarah, whose father was an Iowa District Court Judge, had practiced law in Tipton for a couple of years while her husband was completing medical school and his residency. In June, 2000 the firm became known as Foss, Kuiken, Gookin, and Cochran, P.C.

Gary L. Cameron then merged his practice into the firm in January, 2003. Gary had been in practice in Fairfield for more than 40 years, although his law practice was temporarily interrupted by serving a term as Iowa Secretary of State beginning in January, 1963. Gary had also served as Jefferson County Attorney prior to being Secretary of State.

In 2011 both Gary Cameron and Myron Gookin left FKG&C. Gary retired from the firm as of June 30th, and Myron Gookin left the firm due to his appointment as District Court Judge by Governor Terry Branstad. Myron left the firm as of September 15th.

Due to increased case demands and because they wanted to plan for their own succession, the partners made two hires after Gary and Myron left.

Lucas Helling, a December 2011 Graduate of the Drake University Law School, joined the firm in March of 2012. Lucas was admitted to practice in Iowa on April 23, 2012 after passing the bar exam, and is now a full-time associate with the firm.

Vanessa M.Y. Willman, a September 2011 graduate of Thomas M. Cooley Law School, joined the firm as an associate attorney in March, 2015. Vanessa moved to Iowa in 2012 and was admitted to practice law in Iowa on May 3, 2013.
