Our firm, often called the Cadwell Law Firm, reached its 125 year milestone of continuous practice in 2016 after its founding by Ulysses S. Grant Cherry in 1891. We were a founding member of the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce in 1907 and have had had close ties with the business community throughout our history.

The breadth and depth of our experience in actual civil trials and appeals is a matter of public record. Less so, by its very nature, is the guiding hand of our business lawyers in significant enterprises, transactions and public/private partnerships that have helped fuel the growth, prosperity, and well-being in this remarkable city.

Our loyalty to our clients' needs starts with our loyalty to each other and our commitment to service as a way of life. Our most senior lawyer worked actively into his 80s and was still here every day into his late 90s. Our young lawyers come from the tops of their classes and judicial clerkships and quickly become uncommonly skilled at their responsibilities. Along the way, our lawyers have been recognized at the top tiers in their fields by Chambers USA, Best Lawyers, Super Lawyers and other rating services that have become familiar benchmarks. We all are members of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of South Dakota, the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota, and the Second Circuit Bar Association.

In this time of decreasing civil jury trials, our lawyers to continue to try cases when it serves our clients' best interests. Every litigation partner with at least 10 years' of experience has been elected to the American Board of Trial Advocates. Over our long history we have appeared in virtually every courtroom in South Dakota; and with our proximity to Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska, we also have lawyers who practice in those states. We are known for civility and collegiality even in the most difficult circumstances; and our lawyers are often sought out as mediators or for other alternative dispute resolutions.

Our Firm's historical practice roots were in civil trials, appeals and bankruptcy, but expansion into our current breadth started some 40 years ago. In our current practice we have represented hundreds of physicians and physician organizations in their most important relationships and regulatory issues, dozens of local governments in their most difficult challenges, numerous banks in commercial finance and credit card services, insureds and insurers in sorting out the most complex coverage problems, real estate developers in all forms of transactions, employers dealing with the maze of regulation of employee relations, and trust companies and large family trusts increasingly drawn by our state's favorable trust laws. Our lawyers also guide governance of more than two dozen nonprofit organizations devoted to child welfare, education, conservation, suicide prevention and a host of other charitable and civic causes.
