Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland & Perretti LLP boasts a storied legacy as one of the oldest and largest law firms in the state of New Jersey. The firm's origins can be traced back to at least 1882, when the Newark-based law firm Riker and Riker was first established. One of the original Riker partners, Adrian Riker, was a prominent attorney in New Jersey in the early 20th century, and served as president of the Essex County Bar Association in 1904. The Riker firm merged with Emerson, Emery & Danzig in 1948 to create Riker, Emery & Danzig, which became one of the foremost law firms in the state. Throughout the following years, the firm underwent several name changes that reflected the tenures of notable legal figures such as New Jersey Attorneys General William Hyland and Peter Perretti, and Dickinson Debevoise, who joined the federal bench in 1979. The firm adopted its current name in 1985, although it is commonly known as Riker Danzig.
Over the years, many distinguished members of New Jersey's legal community have been affiliated with the firm. Former U.S. Attorney General and Under Secretary of State Nicholas DeB Katzenbach joined Riker Danzig after retiring as general counsel of IBM, while two former New Jersey Supreme Court Justices, Stewart G. Pollock and the late Sidney M. Schreiber, became members of the firm after stepping down from the bench. Former Ambassador to Panama and United States Representative William J. Hughes also served as Of Counsel to Riker Danzig. Former New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey, the state's first African-American to serve in that position, was a partner at Riker Danzig before entering public service. The firm's former partner, Marie Garibaldi, became the first female President of the State Bar Association and the first female Justice of the Supreme Court of New Jersey in 1982. Most recently, former partner Anne M. Patterson was sworn in as a Justice of the Supreme Court of New Jersey in September 2011. Additionally, numerous Superior Court judges, chief counsel to the Governor, Transportation Commissioner, Assistant United States Attorneys, Deputy Attorneys General, presidents of bar associations, and other public servants have either currently or formerly been associated with Riker Danzig.
The firm's current practice encompasses a diverse range of clients, including multinational and regional corporations, small businesses, charitable organizations, and individuals. Riker Danzig has gained a reputation for its expertise in complex litigation, complex insurance and reinsurance matters, governmental and regulatory affairs, and transactional matters. The firm provides these services to significant segments of the public utility, banking, insurance, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, and retail industries. In a recent primary marketing research study conducted by a nationally recognized firm, Riker Danzig was deemed the go-to law firm in New Jersey. Clients praised the firm's litigation practice for its innovative strategies and out-of-the-box thinking, and described Riker Danzig as ""the best firm in the state for high-level government intervention.""
The firm's strong history and reputation are a testament to the talent and character of its people, the teamwork that is a hallmark of the firm, and its commitment to providing clients with unique, responsive, and effective legal counsel.
