Rey is an active immigration law practitioner with additional experience in matters relating to arts administration and New York family law. Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, Rey earned his BA LLB from Stellenbosch University and his LLM from the University of Cape Town, graduating top of his class for the latter. Rey went on to teach legal writing as a faculty member at Stellenbosch University Faculty of Law for three years until he was awarded a six-month fellowship at the renowned Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany in 2013. He subsequently published a book, titled Dignitas, concerned with definitions of dignity drawn from select South African defamation court cases. Rey has also been a co-librettist on two operas premiered by Staatstheater Darmstadt in Germany.
