Local Advantage. Regional Coverage.
At Harris Shelton Hanover Walsh, PLLC, we believe successful results are achieved by building true partnerships with our clients. We do this by understanding their industries and the economic climates in which they operate. Then we tackle the legal issues that impact their businesses and their livelihoods.
We have deep roots in Memphis and the surrounding communities, and with offices in Nashville, Covington and Oxford, Mississippi, we are positioned to cover clients' needs throughout Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas.

We partner with businesses and individuals to navigate the myriad challenges of transacting business and competing in a global economy. Our work reflects our clients' values and their overall philosophy. We bring this focus to all our practices and particularly to counseling our health care clients where regulatory compliance impacts every aspect of patient care and the delivery of professional services. From physician credentialing to hospital-physician agreements to defending medical malpractice claims and every other aspect of the business and profession of providing health care in a regulated environment and a litigious world, we have grown with this industry. It is the heart of our practice.
But counseling and representing health care clients is not all we do. Our lawyers are engaged in all facets of a modern law office -- prosecuting and defending sophisticated business litigation and employment matters of every stripe; crafting complex estate plans and trusts; counseling clients in receiverships and debt restructuring and business reorganizations. Our lawyers even work to provide tax relief for businesses and individuals who need a partner to stand with them against state and federal authorities. We also have an active representation of several municipalities and their individual departments and governing bodies.

HISTORY
A Storied Legacy. A New Chapter.
Harris Shelton was founded by Walter C. Chandler, a philanthropist, civic leader, and longtime public servant who represented Memphis in both the Tennessee and U.S. House of Representatives (authoring the first bankruptcy wage-earner law) as well as for multiple mayoral terms. Mr. Chandler's most prominent accomplishment in private practice was his representation of the plaintiffs in the landmark U. S. Supreme Court decision in Baker v. Carr, known to all students of constitutional law as the ruling that opened the courthouse to individuals seeking equal representation.
Harris Shelton's practice includes another well-established Memphis law firm, Hanover Walsh Jalenak & Blair, which traces its origins back more than a century. Hanover Walsh has a similarly prominent historic legacy dating from Joe Hanover's deciding vote in the Tennessee legislature ratifying the Nineteenth amendment to the U.S. Constitution and establishing a woman's right to vote and another notable Supreme Court appearance in Citizens for the Preservation of Overton Park, Inc. v. Volpe, a seminal administrative law ruling. The firm's Supreme Court heritage continues today with our representation of the petitioner in the 2017 decision in Star Athletica, LLC v Varsity Brands, Inc., a copyright infringement case which had significant implications for the multi-billion dollar fashion design industry.

STRENGTH IN DIVERSITY AND VARIETY
Litigation is only part of our story, though. The firm's practice has evolved with the enactment of new laws in health care with the birth of Medicare/Medicaid in the 1960s and the corresponding application of new laws in civil rights in employment, commerce, and housing; ERISA, environmental regulation, and new Bankruptcy laws in the 1970s and 1980s; and expanded health care regulation in the 1990s and perpetual amendments to the tax code in every decade.
Although we have a firm commitment to the law and our clients, with integrity and consistency, our individual stories reflect a variety and diversity that mirrors our Memphis base.
