A Message From Milwaukee Attorney Michael F. Hupy:

When a law office is founded or what it traces its roots to is not always an easy determination to make.

I was in high school in the mid-60s when our Milwaukee law office was founded. For some time, I was under the impression that our Milwaukee law office was founded in 1969. When I joined this law firm in 1989, it was already well established. Later, someone asked me how I could be sure that our Milwaukee, Wisconsin law firm started in 1969 when I hadn't graduated from law school until 1972.

I took this question as a challenge and did some research. As it turned out, I had understated our Milwaukee law firm's age by at least five years.

Below is a copy of a memo that was circulated to our Milwaukee, Wisconsin law office employees in April 1989, announcing the celebration of Arlene Johnson's 25th anniversary with this law firm. She retired after 33 years of service with our Milwaukee law firm in 1997, when the firm was known as Michael F. Hupy & Associates. Our Milwaukee, Wisconsin law office is now known as Hupy and Abraham.

Milwaukee Law Office Letter

Over the years our Milwaukee law firm has had several different partners and has been known by several different names. As I traced the roots and origin of this law firm, I was helped by several people and numerous documents I found in our Milwaukee office's business records.

When I joined our Milwaukee law firm in 1989, one of the founders was still at this Milwaukee law firm and, when he left in 1997, I bought that original owner's share in the law firm and became sole shareholder. Attorney Jason F. Abraham became a shareholder in 1999 and the name of our law office became Hupy and Abraham on January 1, 2006. In September 2007, I named Attorney Chad A. Kreblin as another shareholder at the Milwaukee, Wisconsin law office.

There are eight law firms in Milwaukee, employing hundreds of lawyers, that can trace their origins back more than one hundred years. When one Wisconsin law office's claim of a 150-year history didn't add up in my opinion, I questioned it and the Wisconsin law office retreated from its 150-year claim and reduced its claimed age to 115 years.

The oldest law firm in Wisconsin is Foley & Lardner, LLP, which claims to have been established over 165 years ago. The very prominent Milwaukee law office of Borgelt, Powell, Peterson & Frauen traces its roots back 126 years. In 2006, it commemorated its 126-year status by adding information on its letterhead and envelope stating that it was founded in 1881. In 126 years, Borgelt, Powell, Peterson & Frauen also had various partners and law firm names. Shown below is a copy of the Milwaukee law firm's letterhead as it has been used since 2006.
