Leff Law Firm grew from humble beginnings to what it is today, through hard work and dedication to its clients.
The firm's founder, Arthur O. Leff, came to Iowa City from Onawa, Iowa, to pursue a legal education at the University of Iowa. He barely had any savings and no financial support. After graduating from law school in 1929, Arthur started practicing law in Iowa City. Despite the raging Great Depression, Arthur persevered and prospered. For many years starting in the late 1930s, Arthur was general counsel for the University of Iowa, and taught at the law school for decades as an adjunct professor.
Arthur's sons, Philip A. Leff and Alan R. Leff, joined the firm in 1959 and 1962, respectively. Phil followed in Arthur's footsteps and taught the "Title Examination and Real Estate Transactions" course as an adjunct professor at the University of Iowa College of Law. Though in the early years of his practice Phil worked in a variety of areas of the law, he found his passion was in estate planning and real estate transactions, and shifted his practice accordingly. As captured in an interview in 1998 (below), Phil was active in the Iowa City community, and was famous for his wit and dry sense of humor.
