Maupin, Cox & LeGoy was founded in 1972 by Steven T. Walther and Jon J. Key under the firm name of Walther & Key. Ernest J. Maupin joined the firm in 1973, and the name of the firm and its members have evolved since then. Mr. Walther retired from the firm in January 2006 following his appointment to the Federal Election Commission where he now serves as the Chairman. Mr. Key is retired but remains of counsel to the firm.

Although the firm began with a local general civil practice, it now has a national reputation for its extensive and broad based expertise in all aspects of civil law. The firm handles matters requiring the resolution of complex civil disputes, whether through mediation, arbitration, or litigation. The firm has an extensive tax practice and handles all phases of federal tax matters, including individual, partnership, trust, estate, and corporate income tax matters, estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer tax matters, and tax litigation. The firm handles all aspects of civil litigation, corporate and public finance matters, creditor bankruptcy, real property, health care, employment, civil rights defense, and education law matters, including representation of institutional and governmental entities.
