On the 1st of February, 1998, the national civil litigation boutique, Wheeler Trigg O'Donnell (WTO), was established by a core group of experienced litigators and five founding partners. The fruition of a dream that was privately discussed amongst the founding partners over a breakfast table came to pass. Since its inception, WTO has established a strong presence and brand recognition in the legal industry, earning recognition for its expertise in complex trials, high-stakes commercial litigation, and class actions, among other areas of practice.

In 2019, WTO was named as one of seven finalists for National Litigation Boutique of the Year by The American Lawyer, for the second consecutive year. Additionally, WTO was also included in the Top 14 "Most-Feared" Firms by BTI Consulting, based on feedback from in-house counsel who reported their preference for having WTO on their side in any dispute.

The founding partners and early partners at WTO were former members of the trial department of a well-established full-service law firm in Denver. The decision to establish the firm was driven by the need for specialized, trial-specific resources to support their teams in serving their core clients. The firm was established by trial attorneys and litigators, with the aim of focusing all of its resources and talent on civil trials.

Over the years, WTO has attracted talented lateral hires from prominent national and Colorado-based law firms, most of whom continue to practice with the firm today. The firm's early success can be attributed to a steady flow of work from two major automotive manufacturers, both of whom remain clients to this day. Today, WTO serves over 450 clients, including household-name brands, Fortune 500 corporations, renowned private companies and individuals, and industry leaders from around the world.

With a total of 110 lawyers and 120 support staff, WTO has enjoyed steady and stable growth for over 20 years. The firm was originally named Wheeler Trigg Kennedy but changed its name to Wheeler Trigg O'Donnell in 2009, following the tragic and untimely death of founding partner, Mark Kennedy.
