William D. Dolan, III has over 40 years' experience in civil and criminal litigation. His trial practice has included a wide range of business disputes that threatened the existence of companies; the defense of legal malpractice claims; and the defense of criminal matters in state and federal court, regionally and nationally, especially in the area of white collar defense. Mr. Dolan served as a court-designated Special Prosecutor, in which he led a team of lawyers and investigators that resulted in the conviction and incarceration of a sitting judge for the first time in Virginia history.
Mr. Dolan was President of the Virginia State Bar (the administrative arm of the Virginia Supreme Court). During his term, he established the Lawyers Helping Lawyers Program; established the Health Law Section; was the primary mover in establishing the Virginia State Bar Professionalism Course which is required of all new admittees to the Virginia Bar. He was also a leading proponent of the establishment of Virginia's mandatory continuing legal education requirements. Mr. Dolan is a current member of the Advisory Committee on the Rules of the Virginia Supreme Court, and is a permanent member of the U.S. Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference.
Mr. Dolan is listed in The Best Lawyers in America, in four categories of Litigation, Super Lawyers and Chambers U.S.A. Guide to America's Leading Lawyers for Business. Mr. Dolan is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a Fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and a Fellow in the American and Virginia Bar Foundations.
Mr. Dolan is a member of the Bars of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the District of Columbia and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. He holds a B.A. Degree from Marquette University and a J.D. from the Catholic University of America.
Mr. Dolan is a past member and Chair of the State Board for Virginia Community Colleges, a member of the Va. General Assembly Joint Subcommittee Studying Election Laws, a member of the Governor's commission on the University for the Twenty-First Century and a member of the Virginia General Assembly Joint Subcommittee Studying the Commonwealth's System of Appellate Review of Civil Cases.
Mr. Dolan is a past member of the Arlington Community Foundation Board of Trustees, past Chair of the Arlington County Emergency Medical Services Council, past member of the Board of Trustees of Arlington Hospital (now Virginia Hospital Arlington), past Chair of the Arlington County Fiscal Affairs Advisory Committee, past Chair of the Arlington County Consumer Protection Commission and past member of the Board of Directors of the Washington Airports Task Force.
Mr. Dolan served as an Adjunct Associate Professor for the Department of Community and Family Medicine of Georgetown University School of Medicine.
Mr. Dolan was twice the nominee of the Virginia Democratic Party for the Office of Attorney General.
