Mr. Neil joined the United States Marine Corps in 1965 and received the Purple Heart and the Navy Cross (our nation's second highest combat service medal) as a result of combat action while serving as a Platoon Commander in Vietnam. Mr. Neil ultimately attained the rank of Brigadier General and assumed command of Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton for nine months during Operation Desert Shield. When not on active duty, Mr. Neil embarked on his career as a trial lawyer and built a firm, like his military career, that demands honesty, integrity, and accountability from colleagues, clients, and opponents alike. In early 1964, John S. Rhoades approached two other prominent San Diego attorneys ? the celebrated John T. Holt and William Macomber ? who he knew and respected, with the idea of forming their own law firm. While the three men had different backgrounds and personalities, they shared the same high ethical standards and passion for practicing law, and reasoned that it would be in the best interests of their clients and themselves if they formed their own firm. On February 1, 1964, the law firm of Holt, Macomber & Rhoades was established.
