Job Overview:
A law firm seeks an experienced and detail-oriented attorney to join its national litigation practice in Chicago. This role focuses on investigating and litigating high-stakes property loss cases, including explosions, fires, structural failures, equipment malfunctions, and other catastrophic incidents for subrogation purposes. The position requires analytical thinking, legal and technical research, and collaboration with industry experts to develop strategic claims. Attorneys in this role will handle cases from initial investigation through trial, working on cutting-edge legal and scientific matters.

Duties:

  • Conduct comprehensive investigations into industrial, commercial, and property loss incidents.
  • Assess potential tort and contract claims for subrogation purposes.
  • Draft pleadings, discovery requests, and legal motions.
  • Take and defend depositions of fact witnesses and expert consultants.
  • Collaborate with engineers, industry professionals, and scientific experts to build strong cases.
  • Develop and implement litigation strategies from case inception through trial.
  • Stay current on evolving legal principles and scientific advancements relevant to the practice area.
  • Travel periodically within the U.S. as required for case development and proceedings.

Requirements:

  • 2 to 5 years of experience in complex litigation.
  • Background in product liability or construction defect litigation preferred.
  • Prior subrogation experience is a plus.
  • Strong legal writing, research, and analytical skills.
  • Effective verbal communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Active and good standing membership with the State Bar of Illinois.

Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving and strategic thinking abilities.
  • Detail-oriented approach to case investigation and legal argumentation.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers and industry experts.
