A law firm located in Austin, TX is seeking an Associate Attorney with a focus on Municipal Law to join their team. The ideal candidate will be licensed to practice law in Texas and possess experience or a demonstrated interest in municipal law, including counseling local government staff, drafting legal documents, and advocating clients' interests before administrative and judicial bodies. This role offers a dynamic work environment with opportunities to engage in various aspects of municipal law and local government issues.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Counsel local government staff, volunteers, and elected officials on legal matters.
  • Draft ordinances, resolutions, policies, and procedures for municipal clients.
  • Negotiate, write, and review contracts, leases, easements, and deeds.
  • Research and analyze state and federal law, including statutes, administrative regulations, and case law, and prepare detailed legal memoranda.
  • Advocate clients' interests before administrative and judicial bodies, including municipal courts.
  • Provide legal advice during city council, board, and commission meetings.
  • Practice in the general field of law and specifically in Municipal Law, including areas such as budget and fiscal management, economic development, elections and voting rights, ethics and professionalism, land use and development, law enforcement and municipal court, legislative consulting and advocacy, open meetings and records, personnel and employment matters, procurement and construction projects, real estate transactions, utilities and telecommunications, and water, wastewater, and environmental issues.
  • Represent clients in various legal proceedings and negotiations.
  • Collaborate with clients, staff, and other legal professionals to achieve favorable outcomes.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in Texas, in good standing.
  • 2-5 years of legal experience with a demonstrated interest or experience in Municipal Law.
  • Strong research and writing skills, with the ability to prepare detailed legal documents and memoranda.
  • Exceptional oral communication skills, including the ability to speak effectively in small groups, before large audiences at public meetings, and in the courtroom.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and legal research tools such as Lexis or Westlaw.
  • Background or familiarity with State or Local Government Law and Administrative Law is preferred.

Education and Certifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Texas Bar with a current Texas Bar Card.
