A prominent law firm is seeking a highly experienced Counsel to join its Trade & National Security Practice in Washington, D.C. This role involves advising a diverse range of clients, including technology and life sciences companies, on complex trade, sanctions, and export control matters. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in U.S. export controls, economic sanctions, and national security issues, working with advanced technologies and managing high-level client relationships.

Duties

  • Provide counsel on trade and economic sanctions, export controls (EAR, ITAR), OFAC regulations, and foreign direct investment reviews.
  • Advise on trade policy and national security issues, including CFIUS filings, compliance counseling, and product classifications.
  • Manage license applications, rulemaking advocacy, internal investigations, and enforcement proceedings.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships, offering strategic guidance to technology and life sciences companies.
  • Collaborate with company founders, senior government officials, and executives on cutting-edge technology matters.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in trade and national security, with a focus on export controls and economic sanctions.
  • Demonstrated expertise in handling EAR, ITAR, OFAC, and CFIUS filings.
  • Excellent academic credentials, with strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Prior experience in government or in-house roles is beneficial but not required.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications

  • Bar admission to practice law in the jurisdiction of Washington, D.C., or eligibility to obtain such admission.
