Family Law Attorney

Job Overview
A respected law firm is seeking a seasoned and driven Family Law Attorney to join its Sioux Falls office. The ideal candidate will bring strong courtroom presence, excellent legal acumen, and the ability to independently manage complex family law cases. Duties

• Represent clients in a full range of family law matters including divorce, custody, child support, alimony, and property division

• Provide legal counsel regarding client rights and obligations under Iowa and/or Nebraska family law

• Manage a caseload independently and ensure timely progress of each matter

• Draft, review, and file legal documents such as motions, petitions, stipulations, affidavits, and orders

• Appear in court for contested hearings, mediations, and trials

• Develop and execute litigation and settlement strategies

• Negotiate terms with opposing counsel to achieve favorable resolutions

• Conduct legal research and stay up to date with changes in family law

• Prepare legal briefs and memoranda to support case arguments

• Maintain regular communication with clients, offering compassionate support and clear updates

• Participate in business development, networking, and firm-related outreach events

• Provide guidance to paralegals and team members and assist in mentoring as responsibilities grow

Requirements

• 2–5 years of experience handling family law matters, preferably in Iowa or Nebraska

• First-chair experience in contested hearings (required)

• Demonstrated ability to manage complex family law cases independently

• Strong written and oral communication skills

• Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management capabilities

• Comfortable working in a fast-paced and high-stakes legal environment

Education

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school

Certifications

• Active license to practice law in Iowa (required)

• Admission in Nebraska and/or South Dakota (preferred)

Skills

• Litigation and courtroom advocacy skills

• Legal drafting and research expertise

• Strong interpersonal and client service abilities

• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and legal practice management tools

• Strategic thinker with strong negotiation and problem-solving skills

• Ability to manage and mentor support staff effectively

Preferred Experience

• 4–7 years in Iowa and/or Nebraska family law

• First-chair trial experience in family court

• Established client base or referral network

• High academic and professional credentials
