Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct patentability analyses and provide strategic advice on patent protection.
  • Draft and prosecute patent applications, including medical device, mechanical, and basic electrical technology-related applications.
  • Prepare and file responses to Office Actions and other communications from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Collaborate with inventors and clients to gather technical information and draft clear and comprehensive patent claims.
  • Manage and oversee patent portfolios, including patent renewals and maintenance.
  • Perform prior art searches and analyze potential infringement issues.
  • Provide technical and legal insights on patent strategies and portfolio management.
  • Keep abreast of legal and industry developments related to patent law and relevant technologies.

Requirements:

  • 2-5 years of experience in patent prosecution, preferably in a law firm setting.
  • Patent Bar membership and ability to practice before the USPTO.
  • A background in one of the following fields: cell or molecular biology, immunology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, cancer biology, pharmacology, biophysics, digital health-focused disciplines, or biomedical, mechanical, or chemical engineering.
  • Experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications in medical device, mechanical, and electrical technologies.
  • Preference for additional experience in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, chemical compositions, or software.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (e.g., biology, chemistry, engineering).
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) is preferred.

Certifications:

  • Patent Bar registration required.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in patent prosecution processes and USPTO procedures.
  • Strong technical writing skills with the ability to draft clear and concise patent applications.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to clients and colleagues.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a team environment.
