Job Overview:

A law firm in New York City, NY is seeking a skilled and experienced Tax Controversy Associate Attorney. The role involves representing clients in federal and state tax controversies, including voluntary disclosure cases, audits, appeals, fast-track mediation, amnesty filings, tax court matters, collections, and competent authority requests. The ideal candidate will have 2-6 years of relevant experience, strong research and communication skills, and a proven track record in managing complex tax controversy cases.

Duties:

  • Represent clients in federal and state tax controversies, including voluntary disclosure cases, audits, appeals, fast-track mediation, and tax court matters.
  • Manage and strategize on a diverse range of tax controversy matters, including amnesty filings and collections.
  • Conduct thorough research and analysis of tax laws and regulations.
  • Draft detailed legal documents, responses to governmental authorities, and persuasive arguments.
  • Review and interpret federal and state income tax returns, international informational reporting forms, and related documentation.
  • Prepare and present written responses to governmental authorities and assist clients in resolving tax issues.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with IRS agents and other governmental personnel to facilitate favorable settlements.
  • Utilize Microsoft Excel for tax projections, interest, and penalty assessments, and create Microsoft PowerPoint entity and flow charts.
  • Handle multiple cases and filing deadlines with strong project management skills.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and government officials via phone, video, and in-person meetings.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) required; LLM, CPA, or MS Tax is a plus.
  • 2-6 years of relevant experience with a law or CPA firm, including demonstrable tax controversy experience.
  • Admission to the Connecticut Bar (or willingness to take/waive into the CT Bar).
  • Proven ability to manage complex cases and deadlines effectively.
  • Experience with international tax and reporting, including FBARs, PFICs, CFCs, trusts, CTA, CRS, and FATCA is a plus.
  • Experience reviewing federal and state income tax returns and related documentation.
  • Strong research, drafting, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
