Job Overview

Duties

  • Draft and file patent applications in the biotechnology field
  • Prosecute patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
  • Conduct patentability and freedom-to-operate analyses
  • Advise clients on patent portfolio strategy, patentability, and infringement issues
  • Assist in the preparation of responses to office actions and other USPTO communications
  • Conduct patent-related due diligence and support licensing and transactional work
  • Collaborate with colleagues and clients on complex patent matters, ensuring effective strategies and solutions
  • Manage a growing docket of patent applications
  • Work closely with senior attorneys, clients, and technical experts

Requirements

  • 1 to 5 years of experience in patent prosecution, preferably within the biotechnology or life sciences sectors
  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in a life sciences technology area
  • Active membership in the Patent Bar (USPTO Registration Number)
  • Willingness to prepare for, take, and pass the Patent Bar exam within the first 12 months if not already registered
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well both independently and within a team

Education

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in a life sciences or biotechnology-related field

Certifications

  • USPTO Registration Number (Patent Bar) required
  • If not registered, must pass the Patent Bar exam within the first 12 months of employment

Skills

  • Expertise in patent prosecution, particularly in the biotechnology or life sciences sectors
  • Strong understanding of patent law and the patent application process
  • Ability to communicate complex technical and legal issues clearly
