A law firm seeks a motivated and skilled Patent Agent to join its team in Redwood City, CA. This position offers a unique opportunity for professional growth and development, with potential for advancement into a senior patent agent role. The ideal candidate will have a background in the biological sciences and be registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. This role provides the chance to work closely with partners and senior agents, develop client relationships, and contribute to a dynamic and supportive team environment.

Duties:

  • Assist in preparing and prosecuting patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Collaborate with senior patent agents and partners to build and manage a diverse portfolio of patents.
  • Conduct patent searches, analyze patentability, and provide strategic recommendations for clients.
  • Draft patent applications and responses to office actions, working under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Develop client relationships and increase client contact while building a professional network.
  • Take an active role in client meetings and communications, ensuring a high level of service.
  • For senior patent agents, work autonomously in managing patent portfolios and filing with the USPTO.
  • Maintain and manage client records, ensuring accurate and up-to-date filings.

Requirements:

  • A science degree in the biological sciences, preferably an advanced degree in fields such as chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, cell biology, or molecular biology.
  • Must be registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Strong academic credentials and a proven track record of success.
  • Previous experience in law firm or industry settings is preferred, but not required.
  • For senior roles, experience working independently and managing patent prosecution matters is required.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team while developing autonomy over time.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific field (Advanced degree preferred).

Certifications:

  • USPTO Registration (required).
