Associate Attorney needed for Portland office

Job Overview:
A well-established criminal defense law firm is seeking a dedicated Associate Attorney to join its Portland, ME office. The ideal candidate will have 3+ years of experience in criminal defense and a strong passion for advocating on behalf of individuals charged with criminal offenses. This role offers an opportunity to build an independent criminal defense practice with substantial support from experienced attorneys and a collaborative team environment. The position offers flexibility with a hybrid work arrangement.

Location:

• Portland, ME

Duties:

• Represent clients charged with various criminal offenses in Cumberland County and surrounding areas.
• Build an independent criminal defense practice with high-quality support and supervision.
• Collaborate with other attorneys to provide court coverage as needed.
• Conduct legal research and prepare comprehensive briefs and pleadings.
• Draft motions, memorandums, and other legal documents.
• Attend client meetings, court proceedings (including trials, sentencings, emergency bail hearings, etc.).
• Assist with case management, maintaining case files, and ensuring deadlines are met.
• Develop strong relationships with clients, opposing counsel, and court personnel.
• Manage high-pressure situations and communicate effectively with clients and stakeholders.
• Demonstrate compassion and dedication in representing individuals accused of serious criminal offenses.

Requirements:

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
• Admission to the Maine Bar (required).
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in criminal defense or a related legal setting.
• Strong ability to analyze facts, laws, rules, and apply applicable law.
• Ability to conduct legal research and develop effective litigation strategies.
• Experience with preparing and conducting witness examinations, delivering opening/closing statements, and handling evidentiary objections.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
• Ability to handle difficult situations and interact effectively with clients, opposing counsel, and the court.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Education:

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

• Admission to the Maine Bar (required).
