Job Overview:

A prominent law firm is seeking a highly qualified Science Advisor/Patent Agent to join its Intellectual Property Transactions & Strategies group. This position is ideal for individuals with experience in patent law, including drafting patent applications, responding to office actions, and conducting prior art searches. The firm values candidates with a background in biology or chemistry, as well as those with expertise in technology transfers and corporate transactions.

Location:

  • Boston, MA

Duties:

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications in the fields of biology, chemistry, or related disciplines.
  • Prepare and file office action responses, working with attorneys to ensure timely and accurate filings.
  • Conduct patentability and freedom to operate analyses by searching relevant patent databases.
  • Perform due diligence in support of corporate transactions and technology transfers.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance in IP transactions, including licensing and acquisitions.
  • Collaborate with attorneys and clients to develop strategic patent portfolios.
  • Assist in identifying potential patent infringements and formulating strategies for resolution.
  • Stay current on developments in patent law and scientific advancements.

Requirements:

  • M.D. or Ph.D. in biology, chemistry, or a related field.
  • Experience in patent prosecution, including drafting patent applications and office action responses.
  • Familiarity with conducting prior art searches and freedom to operate analyses.
  • Experience with IP due diligence and corporate transactions is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong academic credentials and demonstrated expertise in relevant scientific fields.

Education:

  • M.D. or Ph.D. in biology, chemistry, or a related field.

Certifications:

  • USPTO Patent Bar membership strongly preferred.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in patent prosecution, including application drafting and responding to office actions.
  • Strong knowledge of intellectual property law, particularly in relation to science and technology.
  • Experience with patent databases and search tools.
  • Ability to perform freedom to operate and patentability analyses.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Collaborative and client-focused approach to work.
