Job Overview: A law firm seeks a Life Science Patent Associate to join their New York office. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in chemistry or biochemistry, along with several years of experience in patent prosecution, portfolio management, and related legal work in the life sciences sector. This position offers a balanced mix of responsibilities, including patent counseling, litigation support, and opinion work, with a particular focus on pharmaceuticals, biosimilars, natural products, and ag-bio sectors.

Duties:

  • Handle patent prosecution, including preparing and filing patent applications related to life sciences technologies.
  • Provide patent portfolio management services, including strategic counseling and client advisory on patent matters.
  • Conduct patent opinion work, offering expert legal analysis on infringement, validity, and freedom-to-operate issues.
  • Support litigation efforts, including assisting with pre-litigation strategy and trial preparation, particularly in Hatch-Waxman and ANDA matters.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to provide comprehensive legal support for high-profile pharmaceutical and biotech companies.
  • Stay updated on trends and developments in patent law and life science technologies.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in patent law, with a focus on life sciences.
  • Advanced degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely related field (Ph.D. preferred).
  • Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Experience with patent prosecution, portfolio management, and providing patent opinions.
  • Knowledge of Hatch-Waxman, ANDA, and pharmaceutical patent litigation is a plus.
  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team setting.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • An advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related life science field is required.

Certifications:

  • USPTO registration is required.

  • Expertise in patent prosecution, portfolio management, and life sciences law.
  • Strong writing and communication skills, with an ability to explain complex legal and technical issues clearly.
