A law firm in Columbus, OH is seeking a Litigation Associate Attorney to represent public utilities in rulemaking, ratemaking, and complaint case proceedings. The role also involves advising competitive retail electric and natural gas service providers on certification and compliance and assisting companies with due diligence for projects and transactions. The ideal candidate will have 2-5 years of experience in public utility law, strong research and writing skills, and the ability to manage complex cases and transactions efficiently.

Duties:

  • Represent public utilities in regulatory proceedings, including rulemaking, ratemaking, and complaint cases.
  • Advise competitive retail electric and natural gas service providers on certification, regulatory compliance, and industry standards.
  • Assist companies in conducting due diligence for utility-related projects and transactions.
  • Draft applications, motions, discovery requests, settlement agreements, and other legal documents for public utility and regulatory matters.
  • Research and analyze complex legal issues related to public utility law and prepare legal memoranda, briefs, and case strategies.
  • Participate in hearings, trials, and administrative proceedings before regulatory bodies and courts.
  • Provide legal counsel on compliance with Ohio-specific public utility laws and regulations, as well as broader regulatory developments in the utility industry.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure timely and effective resolution of cases and transactions.
  • Manage and oversee multiple projects, cases, and regulatory matters simultaneously.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Ohio State Bar and in good standing.
  • 2-5 years of experience in public utility law, preferably in Ohio or another state.
  • Experience drafting legal documents such as applications, motions, discovery requests, and settlement agreements.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the Ohio Bar (required).
  • Additional certifications in public utility or energy law (preferred but not required).

Skills:

  • Strong research and legal writing skills, with the ability to draft clear and concise legal documents.
  • In-depth knowledge of public utility laws and regulations, including ratemaking, rulemaking, and compliance matters.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills to effectively represent clients in regulatory proceedings and advise on compliance.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills to handle multiple cases and transactions efficiently.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Attention to detail and analytical skills for conducting due diligence and preparing complex legal strategies.
