A law firm seeks a highly skilled and motivated associate to join its Data, Privacy, and Cybersecurity practice in Palo Alto. The ideal candidate will bring 3-6 years of specialized experience in health privacy, particularly focused on advising digital health and life sciences companies. This is a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge privacy and security matters, including those related to HIPAA and other health-related laws and regulations. Duties:

  • Provide expert legal counsel to health and life sciences companies regarding HIPAA compliance and other health-related privacy and security matters.
  • Advise clients on a range of complex and dynamic privacy and cybersecurity issues, including emerging legal challenges in the digital health sector.
  • Collaborate with cross-practice teams to deliver practical solutions to clients in the health and technology industries.
  • Analyze and interpret health privacy laws and regulations to guide clients through compliance challenges.
  • Engage with technology companies on privacy and cybersecurity issues, especially in the context of health-related data.
  • Support clients as they navigate the ever-changing legal landscape of data protection, privacy laws, and security regulations.
  • Assist with non-health-related privacy and cybersecurity matters as needed, expanding your expertise in this evolving area.
  • Stay current on trends and developments in data privacy, cybersecurity, and health-related regulations to anticipate client needs and offer proactive advice.

Requirements:

  • 3 to 6 years of legal experience in health privacy and security, with a focus on HIPAA and health-related regulations.
  • Experience advising digital health, life sciences, or technology companies is highly desirable.
  • A strong understanding of privacy laws and regulations, particularly in health and cybersecurity sectors.
  • Proven ability to manage complex legal matters and provide practical, client-focused advice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a clear ability to explain complex legal issues in accessible terms.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple, high-priority matters efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • A proactive, solution-oriented mindset, with a commitment to client success and ongoing professional development.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Active membership in the state bar where the candidate is applying, in good standing.
  • Additional certifications in privacy or cybersecurity law (e.g., CIPP/US, CISSP) are a plus but not required.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a deep understanding of privacy and cybersecurity legal principles.
  • Expertise in HIPAA compliance and health-related privacy regulations.
  • Familiarity with privacy laws beyond health care, including GDPR, CCPA, and other data protection regulations.
  • Experience working with technology companies on data privacy and security issues is advantageous.
  • Excellent research, writing, and drafting abilities, especially in the context of complex legal issues.
  • Ability to collaborate with various stakeholders, including clients, regulatory bodies, and cross-disciplinary teams.
