A law firm in Spirit Lake, IA, is seeking an experienced Family Law Attorney to join their team. The ideal candidate will represent clients in various family law matters, providing legal counsel, and advocating for their interests under Iowa law. This role requires strong litigation skills, negotiation abilities, and a compassionate approach to handling sensitive client issues.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Represent clients in diverse family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support, property division, and adoption.
  • Provide legal counsel and advice, explaining rights and obligations under Iowa law.
  • Collaborate within a team of family law attorneys, sharing insights and strategies.
  • Manage a caseload, ensuring cases progress timely and achieve favorable resolutions.
  • Draft, review, and file legal documents such as petitions, motions, affidavits, orders, stipulations, and agreements.
  • Attend court for contested hearings, trials, and mediations.
  • Negotiate and mediate disputes to achieve efficient and amicable resolutions.
  • Develop settlement strategies and negotiate terms with opposing counsel.
  • Conduct legal research on relevant family law issues and stay abreast of Iowa law developments.
  • Prepare legal briefs, memoranda, and arguments to support case strategies.
  • Present arguments and evidence effectively in court.
  • Maintain regular client communication, providing updates and addressing inquiries.
  • Offer compassionate support to clients during emotionally challenging situations.
  • Foster client relationships and participate in business development activities.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active member in good standing of the Iowa State Bar; licensure in South Dakota and Nebraska is beneficial.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in family law; 7-10 years preferred.
  • First-chair trial experience.
  • Strong litigation, negotiation, and mediation skills.
  • Excellent academic and professional credentials.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and attention to detail skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex legal matters clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Empathetic and client-focused approach.
