Job Overview:
A leading law firm is seeking an experienced Patent Agent with a focus on Mechanical Engineering to join its Intellectual Property section. This position will involve managing valuable patent assets, assessing patent risks, and contributing to the prosecution of patent applications for a wide array of innovative technologies. Location:

  • Washington, D.C.

Duties:

  • Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications for clients.

  • Focus on preparing and filing patent filings related to mechanical engineering inventions.

  • Respond to rejections of patent applications from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and other worldwide patent offices.

  • Collaborate with clients working on innovative technologies to secure patent protection and build comprehensive IP portfolios.

  • Assist in establishing and maintaining internal practices, procedures, and technology for managing patent-related information and deadlines.

  • Draft clear and concise written responses and documents related to patent prosecution.

  • Work closely with attorneys and clients to effectively communicate patent strategy and outcomes.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • At least one year of experience in patent prosecution.

  • Experience in the field of lithium-ion batteries/modules/packs or mechanical engineering design/manufacturing is preferred.

  • Registration with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

  • Ability to interact professionally with clients and colleagues at all levels.

  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to manage and prioritize patent filings and deadlines effectively.

  • Ability to think creatively and use good judgment in the decision-making process.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Certifications:

  • Registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Skills:

  • Advanced writing and research skills.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Effective communicator both in person and in written correspondence.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative, global team.
