Job Overview:
A well-established law firm, recognized for its excellence in intellectual property law, is seeking an experienced mid-level to senior intellectual property attorney or patent agent to join its expanding IP Biology/Biotechnology Practice Group. The successful candidate will play a key role in providing expert patent counseling, handling patent procurement, and offering strategic legal advice to clients, with opportunities for licensing and enforcement matters. The position provides flexibility in work arrangements, including remote, hybrid, or in-office options, depending on personal preference.

Duties:

  • Provide expert counsel to clients on strategic intellectual property matters, particularly in the fields of biology and biotechnology.
  • Lead and manage the preparation and prosecution of complex patent applications, ensuring high-quality work in line with industry standards.
  • Oversee global patent portfolios, including coordinating and instructing foreign counsel to manage prosecution across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Conduct detailed patentability, freedom-to-operate, infringement, and invalidity analyses to support clients' business decisions.
  • Collaborate with inventors, technical experts, and portfolio managers to build robust patent strategies.
  • Support clients in IP-related due diligence processes, offering clear and actionable legal opinions.

Requirements:

  • A Ph.D. or MS in a biology-related discipline (e.g., molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, genetics, biochemistry, or biotechnology).
  • At least 4+ years of prior experience in intellectual property law, specifically in patent prosecution.
  • Active registration with the USPTO.
  • Admission to the Delaware Bar in good standing.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex patent cases and IP strategies, particularly in the life sciences and biotechnology sectors.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with an exceptional ability to simplify complex technical concepts for clients.
  • Proven problem-solving capabilities and analytical skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment.
  • A results-driven approach, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Education:

  • Ph.D. or MS in a relevant biological or life sciences field (e.g., molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, genetics).

Certifications:

  • Active USPTO Registration.

Skills:

  • Expertise in patent prosecution, including preparing and prosecuting complex patent applications.
  • Familiarity with managing global patent portfolios and interacting with foreign patent counsel.
  • Strong IP strategy, patentability, and freedom-to-operate analysis skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to synthesize complex information quickly.
  • High-level communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proven ability to work effectively under pressure and prioritize competing tasks.
