Job Overview: A law firm in San Francisco, CA, is seeking a highly qualified Patent Agent to join their intellectual property team. The ideal candidate will have 2-5 years of experience in patent prosecution, preferably at the USPTO or in a law firm setting. Strong academic credentials, excellent writing skills, and a keen analytical mind are essential. Industry experience in related fields such as organic chemistry or medicinal chemistry is advantageous.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct patentability searches and draft patent applications in accordance with USPTO requirements.
  • Collaborate with inventors, attorneys, and clients to strategically protect intellectual property assets.
  • Provide technical and scientific expertise in evaluating patent landscapes and conducting freedom-to-operate analyses.
  • Assist in patent prosecution, including responding to office actions and conducting examiner interviews.
  • Conduct due diligence reviews and intellectual property audits.

Requirements:

  • 2-5 years of experience in patent prosecution, preferably in a law firm or USPTO environment.
  • Strong academic credentials with a Ph.D. in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, or a related discipline. Alternatively, an M.S. with significant industry experience will be considered.
  • Proficiency in understanding chemical structures, properties, and related technologies.
  • PTO registration is strongly preferred. Technical specialists with eligibility to sit for the Patent Bar will also be considered.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Skills:

  • Ability to analyze complex technical and scientific information.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Proficiency in conducting patent searches and drafting patent applications.
  • Team-oriented with excellent interpersonal skills.

Education and Certifications:

  • Ph.D. in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, or a related field preferred.
  • PTO registration strongly preferred, or eligibility to sit for the Patent Bar.
