A law firm in Chicago, IL, is seeking a qualified Patent Agent to join their Intellectual Property Practice Group. The successful candidate will be responsible for drafting and prosecuting patent applications primarily related to mechanical, electrical, or software engineering fields. Job Duties:

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications in a variety of technology areas, with a focus on mechanical, electrical, or software engineering.
  • Conduct prior art searches and analyze patent and scientific papers to assist in the patentability analysis and draft patent applications.
  • Communicate with clients to understand inventions and harvest new filings.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple ongoing projects.
  • Provide support for patent enforcement, licensing, and litigation activities.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of patent prosecution rules and procedures in the US and major international jurisdictions.
  • Collaborate with attorneys, engineers, and scientists to ensure that all patent filings are accurate and comprehensive.

Requirements:

  • Registered Patent Agent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in patent prosecution.
  • Background in mechanical, electrical, or software engineering.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a closely related field.

Certifications:

  • Registration with the USPTO is required.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with patent-related databases and software for prior art searching and patent drafting.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical material to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Competence in handling confidential and sensitive information.
