A law firm is seeking a Mid-Senior Biotech IP Patent Agent with a robust technical background in the biological sciences. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications, performing due diligence investigations, and evaluating patent portfolios. The role involves working directly with clients and requires excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills. A commitment to delivering exceptional client service is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Draft, file, and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications for biotechnology-related inventions.
  • Provide strategic counsel to clients on patent portfolio management, ensuring comprehensive protection of intellectual property.
  • Conduct patentability, freedom-to-operate, and due diligence analyses for client transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and licensing deals.
  • Prepare and file responses to office actions from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and international patent offices.
  • Collaborate with partners and associates to create effective, business-aligned patent strategies for clients.
  • Conduct infringement and validity assessments, preparing opinions and reports for clients on various IP issues.
  • Stay updated on changes in patent law, specifically relating to biotechnology and life sciences, to provide informed advice to clients.
  • Assist with opposition and appeal proceedings as needed.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships through direct communication and high-quality service delivery.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Ph.D. in Biology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, or a closely related discipline.
  • Certification: Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Experience: 3-8 years of experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications, conducting due diligence investigations, and managing patent portfolios, ideally in a law firm setting.

  • Deep technical knowledge in biological sciences with the ability to analyze and communicate complex scientific data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to present information clearly to clients and colleagues.

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, with the ability to mentor junior team members and manage client engagements.

Additional Desirable Attributes:

  • Prior experience working in a law firm or legal setting with exposure to intellectual property law is preferred.
