Duties

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications, focusing on software, electrical engineering, and computer science innovations.
  • Manage global IP portfolios and obtain IP rights in the U.S. and internationally.
  • Develop patent prosecution strategies in collaboration with clients.
  • Conduct prior art searches and analyze patentability.
  • Support clients with IP strategy, including patent validity and infringement analysis.
  • Engage in client communications to provide high-quality service and updates on patent processes.
  • Potentially expand into other areas of intellectual property work, based on experience and interest.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of patent prosecution experience.
  • Background in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field (advanced degrees and prior work experience preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of software, controls, and controller systems.
  • Electro-mechanical equipment experience is a plus.
  • For Houston-based associates, licensure to practice law in Texas or eligibility to obtain licensure promptly.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with strong analytical abilities.

Education

  • Technical degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field.

Certifications

  • Active membership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • State bar licensure in Texas or Georgia, depending on office location (for Associate candidates).

Skills

  • Proficiency in patent prosecution and drafting, with a focus on software and electronic systems.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to handle a variety of IP matters, including patent portfolio management and client strategy.
  • Effective interpersonal skills for client interactions and team collaboration.
