Job Title: Employee Benefits Associate Attorney
Location: Newport News, VA

Job Overview:
A reputable law firm is currently seeking an experienced Employee Benefits Associate Attorney to join its dynamic and collaborative ESOPs, Benefits & Compensation team. The firm serves a wide range of clients, including privately held, publicly traded, governmental, and tax-exempt entities, providing expert advice on employee benefits and executive compensation matters. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in employee benefits law and the desire to build a long-term career in this practice area.

Duties:

  • Provide comprehensive legal advice on a variety of employee benefits topics, such as qualified retirement plans, employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs), nonqualified deferred compensation plans, equity compensation, employment tax, and welfare benefits.

  • Advise clients on ERISA-related matters, including IRS and DOL audits, executive employment agreements, and M&A transactions.

  • Assist in the growth and development of the team’s ESOP practice, working closely with other attorneys to expand the client base and enhance capabilities.

  • Collaborate proactively with clients and colleagues to address complex benefits and compensation issues.

  • Handle matters independently while also seeking team collaboration when necessary.

  • Contribute to the firm’s ongoing efforts to provide innovative and strategic advice to clients across diverse industries.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years of direct experience in employee benefits and executive compensation law, ideally within a law firm setting.

  • Experience with private-company ESOPs is a plus but not mandatory.

  • Strong understanding of benefits law, including ERISA, tax considerations, and executive compensation matters.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing client relationships and handling multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Excellent communication and analytical skills.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the Virginia or North Carolina Bar, or the ability to become licensed and maintain good standing.

Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of employee benefits, executive compensation, and ERISA regulations.

  • Strong interpersonal skills for relationship building with clients and internal teams.

  • Proven ability to handle complex legal matters and provide strategic advice.

  • Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
