Job Overview: A law firm seeks a skilled Tax Controversy Associate Attorney to represent clients in federal and state tax disputes. This role involves handling a wide range of tax controversy matters, from voluntary disclosure cases to tax court proceedings. The ideal candidate will have a robust background in tax law, excellent analytical skills, and a proven track record of managing complex tax cases.

Duties:

  • Represent clients in federal and state tax controversies, including audits, appeals, and tax court.
  • Handle voluntary disclosure cases and amnesty filings.
  • Manage tax matters involving international tax issues, such as FBARs and FATCA.
  • Prepare and review written responses to governmental authorities.
  • Conduct thorough research and draft documents related to tax disputes.
  • Negotiate with IRS agents and other governmental personnel to resolve tax issues.
  • Manage multiple cases and filing deadlines efficiently.

Requirements:

  • 2-6 years of experience with a law or CPA firm.
  • Demonstrable tax controversy experience, such as a clerkship with the Tax Court or experience representing taxpayers before the IRS.
  • Experience with international tax reporting and compliance is a plus.

Education and Certifications:

  • JD required; LLM, CPA, or MS Tax preferred.
  • Admitted to the CT Bar or willing to take/waive into the CT Bar.

Skills:

  • Strong research, drafting, and analytical skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent project management capabilities and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients and government officials.
  • Comfortable with various communication methods, including phone, video, and in-person interactions.
