A law firm is seeking a highly motivated Junior to Mid-Level Product Design and User Interface Patent Associate Attorney to join their Chicago office. This position offers an opportunity to work with a dynamic team on high-profile projects involving software, AI, IoT, networking, and quantum technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications related to product design, user interface, and other emerging technologies.
  • Conduct thorough patentability and freedom-to-operate analyses.
  • Collaborate with clients, inventors, and technical experts to ensure a comprehensive understanding of technological concepts.
  • Advise clients on intellectual property strategies, including portfolio management and protection of innovation.
  • Perform patent litigation support tasks, including research and drafting technical explanations for legal arguments.
  • Handle various aspects of the patent lifecycle, from initial idea protection to enforcement.
  • Keep up-to-date with advancements in relevant technology areas, particularly software, artificial intelligence, IoT, networking, and quantum technologies.
  • Ensure compliance with all USPTO and legal requirements.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • 2+ years of patent preparation and prosecution experience.
  • Strong academic record and demonstrated ability to handle complex legal and technical matters.
  • Experience in one or more of the following technologies: software, artificial intelligence, IoT, networking, or quantum technologies.
  • Familiarity with product design and user interface patent strategies is a plus.

Education:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the USPTO (required).
  • Active membership in a State Bar, preferably Illinois (or the ability to qualify for admission).

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong technical acumen and the ability to grasp complex technological concepts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills to handle multiple ongoing cases and meet deadlines.
