Job Overview: A prestigious law firm is seeking a Technology Specialist or Patent Agent with a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or a related field to join its Pharmaceutical group. This position offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge pharmaceutical technologies, assisting in securing patent protection and conducting intellectual property due diligence. The role is based in Boston, with the option to work from New York or Washington, DC offices.

Location:

  • Boston, MA (also open to New York, NY or Washington, DC)

Duties:

  • Review technical disclosures and conduct client interviews to gain a deep understanding of new inventions.
  • Perform patent searches in literature and databases to assess the patentability of inventions.
  • Draft assessments on the prospects of securing patent protection.
  • Write and file patent applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Prepare responses to office actions from the USPTO.
  • Develop compelling arguments to advocate for the patentability of inventions before patent examiners.
  • Conduct patent reviews as part of intellectual property due diligence for potential acquisitions or mergers.

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Sound judgment, maturity, and intellectual curiosity.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with business leaders, attorneys, scientists, engineers, inventors, and patent examiners.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities with a strong work ethic.

Education:

  • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a closely related field.

Certifications:

  • Patent Bar admission is a plus, but not required for the Technology Specialist role.

Skills:

  • Expertise in organic chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in patent drafting and preparing responses to the USPTO.
  • Ability to assess patentability and conduct IP due diligence for acquisitions and mergers.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
