A law firm in Boston, MA, is seeking a Patent Technical Specialist to assist with patent research, preparation, submission, and prosecution activities. The role involves leveraging a strong scientific background to develop and recommend patent strategies, conduct literature and patent searches, and interface with firm attorneys and staff. The ideal candidate will possess 0-3 years of patent experience and a technical degree, with post-doctoral or related experience preferred.

Duties:

  • Assist with patent research, application preparation, and submission.
  • Interface with firm attorneys, staff, and other entities as necessary.
  • Conduct literature and patent searches to develop patent strategies.
  • Review file histories of patents and analyze scientific literature.
  • Assist in patent prosecution activities under attorney supervision.
  • Prepare patent applications with close attorney guidance.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • 0-3 years of experience in patent-related activities.
  • Post-doctoral or related experience preferred.
  • Advanced scientific degree (M.S., Ph.D.) or Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline with relevant experience.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Sound scientific and technical knowledge.
  • Awareness of key sources for case law and argument preparation.
  • Understanding of patent prosecution procedures and patent law principles.
  • Basic knowledge of patentability, validity, and infringement concepts.
  • Familiarity with patent lifecycle stages and procedural requirements.
  • Basic understanding of patent application structure and the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure (MPEP).
  • Ability to conduct and evaluate basic patent and literature searches effectively.
  • Proficiency in preparing key facts and observations for responses and opinions.

Education:

  • Advanced scientific degree (M.S., Ph.D.) or Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline with relevant experience.
