A law firm is seeking a highly skilled Patent Agent to join their New York City, NY office. The successful candidate will possess a strong technical background in biological or pharmaceutical sciences, substantial experience in patent prosecution, and a proven ability to conduct detailed analyses for patentability and freedom to operate. The role involves managing patent preparation, prosecution, and counseling, and requires excellent communication skills and a solid academic background.

Duties:

  • Conduct thorough prior art searches to assess patentability and freedom to operate.
  • Analyze patents and scientific literature to assist with patent preparation and prosecution.
  • Prepare and file patent applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Collaborate with attorneys to develop and implement patent strategies.
  • Provide technical expertise and support in the biological or pharmaceutical sciences.
  • Review patent claims, technical documents, and scientific research.
  • Stay updated on patent law developments and advances in relevant scientific fields.

Requirements:

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Ph.D. or M.S. in cellular biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, virology, or a related technical field; or chemistry, organic chemistry, pharmacy, or an equivalent discipline.
  • A technical background in biological or pharmaceutical sciences is preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in patent prosecution.
  • Broad technical knowledge with experience in conducting prior art searches and patent analysis.
  • Excellent academic record.

Education:

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in a relevant technical field such as cellular biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, virology, chemistry, organic chemistry, pharmacy, or an equivalent discipline.

Certifications:

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex scientific and technical information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in patent preparation, prosecution, and counseling.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a legal team.
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional organizational skills.
