Job Overview:

A Washington, DC-based law firm is seeking an experienced Patent Agent to support its expanding intellectual property division, with a particular focus on biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and medical technologies. Acting as a key collaborator with patent attorneys and technical teams, this role plays an integral part in shaping and managing innovation strategies. The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in life sciences and a proactive approach to IP protection, prosecution, and strategy.

Duties:

  • Provide assessments regarding the patent eligibility and protection scope for innovations in life sciences and related technical fields

  • Prepare, draft, and file patent applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

  • Manage the prosecution of U.S. patent applications and coordinate with global associates for international filings

  • Assist in evaluating IP assets during transactional due diligence projects

  • Support the development and implementation of long-term patent portfolio strategies

  • Conduct detailed legal and technical analyses to inform decisions on IP-related matters

  • Collaborate across departments, liaise with external counsel, and contribute to multidisciplinary legal and business initiatives

  • Maintain thorough documentation of patent activities and participate in regular discussions with inventors and stakeholders

Requirements:

  • At least 4 years of experience handling patent prosecution in either a legal or corporate setting

  • Direct exposure to patent matters involving biotechnology, medical diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, or devices

  • Solid understanding of patent law, particularly in the context of life sciences technologies

  • Familiarity with U.S. and international patent systems and procedures

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with both legal teams and scientific experts

Education:

  • Ph.D. in a life sciences discipline (such as molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, or related fields)

Certifications:

  • Active registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, or current eligibility to sit for the Patent Bar

Skills:

  • In-depth technical knowledge in one or more areas of life sciences

  • Excellent legal writing and drafting skills

  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts in clear, concise language

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Team-oriented mindset with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously

  • Additional exposure to mechanical or electrical patent subject matter is advantageous
