A law firm is seeking a highly skilled Patent Agent to join their team in Atlanta, GA. The successful candidate will have substantial experience in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications related to chemistry or materials science. This role requires a deep understanding of various materials and their applications, along with a strong background in modern processing and discovery principles. Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is a must.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications related to chemistry, physics, and materials science.
  • Conduct patentability, state-of-the-art, infringement, and validity searches and analyses.
  • Draft and provide patent opinions.
  • Collaborate with inventors to understand the technical details of their inventions.
  • Maintain current knowledge of developments in patent law and technology relevant to the firm's clients.
  • Assist in patent litigation and enforcement matters.
  • Advise clients on strategies for patent portfolio development and management.
  • Review and analyze patent portfolios to identify potential areas of strength and vulnerability.
  • Participate in business development activities and client meetings.

Requirements:

  • Significant experience in the preparation and prosecution of chemistry or materials science-related patent applications.
  • Strong understanding of patentability, state-of-the-art, infringement, and validity searches and analyses.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, physics, or materials science and engineering is required.
  • Advanced degree or equivalent experience in materials science is strongly preferred.

Certifications:

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of how materials (e.g., metals, polymers, catalytic materials, ceramics, liquid crystals, composites) are used in various applications (e.g., batteries, fuel cells, electronics, biotechnology, nanotechnology).
  • Understanding of modern processing and discovery principles (e.g., casting, additive manufacturing, coating, evaporation, plasma and radiation processing, artificial intelligence, computer simulations).
  • Proficiency in patent search databases and tools.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information to a non-technical audience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
