Job Overview:
A law firm seeks a dedicated Associate Attorney to join its team in Raleigh, North Carolina. This position focuses on handling state and federal criminal appeals and post-conviction litigation. The role involves working closely with firm partners while also managing cases independently. There is potential for the attorney to engage in trial-level criminal defense work; however, the primary focus will be appellate and post-conviction matters.

Duties:

  • Conduct client intake and consultations for potential appellate and post-conviction cases.

  • Investigate and review criminal cases to identify avenues for relief.

  • Represent clients in state and federal appellate and post-conviction proceedings.

  • Draft legal documents, including appellate briefs, motions, and pleadings.

  • Present oral arguments in appellate courts and appear in trial courts for post-conviction matters.

  • Communicate effectively with clients, families, courts, prosecutors, firm partners, and staff.

Requirements:

  • Licensed to practice law in North Carolina.

  • 1-3 years of experience in criminal law, with a preference for appellate and/or post-conviction work.

  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.

  • Ability to work independently and manage a caseload effectively.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • North Carolina State Bar membership (required).

Skills:

  • Exceptional legal research and writing abilities.

  • Strong courtroom advocacy and appellate argumentation skills.

  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and time-management skills.

  • Ability to handle sensitive and complex legal issues with professionalism.
